What's New

Since launching the Bird Migration Explorer in September 2022, we have continued to make enhancements to improve the user experience. Check out our newly added enhancements below.

August 2024
  • There are now over 11,500 bird tracks for almost 200 species including new tagging data from the Bird Genoscape Project, Motus Wildlife Tracking System, USGS Bird Banding Lab, and Movebank; and updated weekly abundance using the latest models by eBird at The Cornell Lab.
  • The redesigned Locations sidebar shows tagged species for your primary location, and you can filter the map to see bird connections from different types of tracking devices.
  • On Species Conservation Challenge pages, the conservation challenge selection box includes graphs to facilitate comparison of exposure across challenges.
  • North American population size estimates for landbirds are now available in the Conservation Statistics section of Species pages.
  • Species Migration animated maps load faster and show the footprint of tracked birds upon opening.
  • In partnership with Movebank, we launched the Migratory Bird Initiative Collection, a compilation of bird migration studies shared by collaborating researchers.

September 2023

  • The Explorer has been updated with the latest bird banding, eBird abundance, seasonal range, and tracking data!
  • Check out the Learning Resources page for tips on using the Bird Migration Explorer.
  • A new Featured Species section on the Bird Species panel highlights some of our favorite maps in the Bird Migration Explorer.
  • Featured Locations are all new. Check out some of these migration hotspots.
  • On the Location Connections map, you can search for any Audubon location such as an Audubon center or chapter. You can also search for a secondary connected location via the search bar in the side panel.
  • On the homepage Migration Journeys map, you can select a single track to further explore the journey made by an individually tracked bird.
  • On Species Conservation Challenges maps, seasonal ranges are an available layer in the Map Layers panel.
  • To easily return to the full map you are viewing, click the Zoom to Extent button.

February 2023
  • The Bird Migration Explorer species migration maps are now available on mobile devices!
  • When browsing and filtering bird species, you will see the count of species in your list and can copy the list to use in other applications.
  • We have added additional bird species filtering capabilities for abundance by location and conservation statistics.
  • When selecting a species by location through the bird species panel, you will be zoomed to that location to make it easier to compare species locally.
  • On a Location Connections page, you can now share a link once you select a connected location.
  • We have improved accessibility for interactive elements -- maps are accessible by the keyboard, and we added accessible names for screen readers and enhancements for the focus states.
  • Visitors can now read about the latest Bird Migration Explorer release updates on this page.
